Barely visible at the bottom of this image is the lightning ground wire. In this case we used the large diameter water pipe that feeds this outdoor utility closet. (It was being used as a ground inside the closet so we figured it was a safe bet). The actual ground wire itself is buried alongside the building where it runs back to the drainpipe and from there up to the rooftop equipment.
